Krakatoa is a Brooklyn-based band which migrated north from Philadelphia in January 2000. To get an idea of what they sound like, imagine if Daniel Johnston had studied under Bartok, or if Itzhak Perlman hit the road with the Magnetic Fields. Or if Bartok and the Magnetic Fields had a big band argument and busted up. This is the musical world of trouble known as Krakatoa. The band has performed everywhere from the Knitting Factory in New York City to the Alternativa Festival in Prague. Krakatoa is Val Opielski on piano, Glendon Jones on violin, Ely Levin on drums, and Ted Casterline on bass. These punk virtuosi were one of the most overlooked and smart avant-garage rock bands playing today. More so since they broke up. Krak's latest, "We are the Rowboats," was released by Cunieform Records on May 6, and found them firing on all cylinders. We're psyched about this record, which was recorded by Bradford Reed. See some Mp3s here. For purchasing and other info, look at Cunieform's Krakatoa page. --Cheers! |
